A SCENT OF APPLES BY BIENVENIDO SANTOS

Bienvenido N. Santos
The story was entitled “Scent of Apple by Bienvenido Santos”. The story was written during the Rebirth of Freedom, the short story “Scent of an Apple” is one out of many small pieces of personal events that Santos has experienced.

Scent of Apples contains work from the 1940s to the 1970s. Although many of Santos writings have been published in the Philippines. Scent of Apples is his only book published in the United States.

The “A SCENT OF APPLES” is a prose in fiction category genre and a short story. It has its own text structures and features that shapes the story, the book has its own headings and subheadings which helps to introduce the topic in the text.

Bold and Italic print exist in the text in the story such as “American women” draw the reader’s attention to important information. “In this old Visayan town, the streets are narrow and dirty and strewn with coral shells. You have been there?” that phrase is part of the text written in Italic helps the reader’s by focusing them on the answer of the question also for important words, new ideas, or foreign language.

The only photo that I’ve seen is in the main title also serves as the front cover of the book it is a big help though cause it present’s the visual information. The story’s organizational pattern or the text structure is that it is a CAUSE AND EFFECT ORGANIZATION and COMPARE AND CONTRAST ORGANIZATION.

I do read vocally and the reading strategies that I use while reading the story is Previewing, skimming to get an overview of the content and organization, and identifying the rhetorical situation. Questioning to understand and remember, Reflecting on challenges to your beliefs and values,Metacognition defined as "thinking about thinking." And the last one is summarizing the whole text.

Well I did apply those in every paragraph in the story.Critical thinking skills is a factor in terms of reading and the skills that I applied is Analyzing, Information Seeking, and also Predicting.

  • What connections can I make based on what I read and what I know?
  • How the Filipino woman of today were different from the stereotype we know or familiar with?
  • How come the story entitled “A Scent of Apples”?
  • Why is the title “A scent of Apples symbolize as nostalgia, sadness?
